This is perhaps the highest-energy show of '78? I wonder if the Dead were upset about something, or if (like some other '78 shows) they were just bombed out of their heads by whatever they took beforehand.

From what I've read, the shows where the Dead were really angry about something that happened in the venue, you can hardly tell from the music itself - 1/14/78, or post-drums 9/2/78, or 11/11/71, are good examples (in those shows, they were bugged by theater security). Or the Stonybrook October '70 shows, when they were really pissed at the student soundcrew - at times like these, the music's kind of flat & desultory or rushed, but not really "angry".
I think the best moment of Dead-anger I've heard is the 10/23/73 Casey Jones when Phil stops everything to yell at security.
Then there are times in the fall '72 shows, like the 11/18/72 Playing in the Band, where things certainly seem tense, but it's probably just the music.

During the 3/21/70 late show things get ugly too. Bob suggests everyone "turn to your neighbor and insult him as worse as you possibly can" and Jerry tells the trouble makers in the audience to "take it easy out there you unruly pigs" before the acoustic set as the audience gets a bit crazy. The cries of "SIT DOWN! SHUT UP! are heard periodically. The band turns in a great performance in spite of it. Jerry is even heard to mutter "shut the fuck up!" at one point. After all the hassles of the acoustic set the band proceeds to deliver a furious, blistering electric set as if daring the crowd to drown them out again! Even road manager Sam Cutler comes out before the encore and has to remark: "Incredible! An incredible, incredible set by The Grateful Dead!"
